Do I Qualify for Habitat for Humanity Home? Our purpose at Habitat
for Humanity is to build homes with families and sell them at no profit
and no interest to families who could not otherwise afford a home. We are
financed through private donations and grants and utilize volunteer labor.
Currently, MWV Habitat builds one house per year. If you think you may qualify
and would like an application for the next house to be built please write,
call or e-mail QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPLICATION Click here for Preliminary questionaire To qualify you must have a housing need. (For example: poor heating, leaks in the roof, overcrowding (three to a bedroom), unsafe or unsanitary conditions, or otherwise substandard or inadequate.) You need to have lived in the Mt. Washington Valley area for at least a year. You need to have a minimum gross household income of $25,000 per year and a maximum of $40,000, depending on family size. ($2,100 to $3,333.00 per month.) If your family is approved for a Habitat home, you must be willing to attend Habitat for Humanity homeowners meetings and join in programs to learn and practice budgeting, and home maintenance and repair. If your family is approved for a Habitat home, all adult (18 years and older) members of your household are required to work at least 300 hours of sweat equity per family, either on the home you will purchase, or on other Habitat homes or projects. Friends may contribute up to 100 of the total hours. If you are approved for a Habitat home, you are required to pay about $1,500 toward closing costs. Of this amount $250 will be due at the time of acceptance. An account will be established and the family that is selected will be required to make monthly payments to this account during the construction period so that sufficient funds will be available at the time of the closing. If you are approved for a home and if you meet the sweat equity and down payment requirements, Mount Washington Valley Habitat for Humanity will sell you a home and provide a no-interest mortgage loan. Your monthly mortgage payments will include payments toward the loan principal and payments to an escrow account to be used for the payment of Real Estate taxes and homeowners insurance premiums. The monthly mortgage loan payments made by Habitat families are used by MWV Habitat to build homes for other families. It is important that payments are made on time so that other local families in need can have an opportunity to own a home.
